1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Textbooks are one of the important components of language teaching and
process which provide input for language learners in EFL contexts (Mishan &
Timmis, 2015) and could facilitate and improve the learning process.
As Hutchinson and Torres (1994, p. 315) maintain, no teaching-learning
situation seems to be complete until it has its right textbook. According to (Xiao,
2010 cited in Obaid et al. (2019, p. 1), foreign language textbooks can then be
transformers of culture(s) hidden in their language content (textual or visual). In
this connection, Asgari (2011, p. 890) believes that since all “teaching materials
(e.g. textbooks) directly or indirectly transmit cultural values to a certain
degree” and particularly textbooks do communicate explicitly or implicitly “sets
of social and cultural values which are inherent in their make-up” (see
Cunningsworth, 1995) part of what is termed “hidden curriculum”, it is the
educators’ concern through consistent researching to find out the ideology and
cultural values in a curriculum behind the materials presented to the students.
Despite the development of Internet and other educational resources, ELT
textbooks continue to play a significant role in teaching and learning.
